This is a bit of a wild card
This is a bit of a wild card but following on from the conversation that a few of us had after the meeting about the use of different dialects, accents and sub culture languages, the film Rockers (1978) might be good for immersing ourselves in the seventies Jamaican music scene and patois...here is the link on Wikipedia
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rockers_%28film%29
I have to second that
I have to second that suggestion. Not only is it a great film, it's a sort of autobiographical documentary. The inclusion of sub-titles is very much needed and certainly helped my understanding of Patois. The ''Cad'' charm of Horsemouth is worth checking out too!
If you wanted to immerse further, Dickie Jobsons, Countrymen (1982) is another Jamaican film not a bad idea looking out for, with even more wicked Reggae to tap your foot to!
If any one is interested
If any one is interested I've got copies of Rockers and The Harder they Come (Jimmy Cliff film) on DVD. Tom, I believe, has a few more "Reggae" films too.
Also a few of us expressed interest in possibly arranging a screening of a film at some point. A couple of suggestions of venues to put this on were made. The 127 Bar on Dulwich Road could cater for this. It'd be handy to know if there would be enough interest in doing this first?
It's very close to the 198 Gallery and has a small, but well equipped bar if one is prone to a gargle or two :-)
Another suggestion was a place in Loughborough Junction, though the name escapes me. G and T would know though!
